Chris MacFarlane
Founder & Programme Lead
I have spent 17 years working at The Hall School, including 10 years as Director of Sport, which has given me a deep understanding of the school’s culture, values and the needs of boys at every stage of their development.
Throughout my career, I have worked across all age ranges, building a strong track record of inspiring boys of all abilities and sporting interests. My approach has always been rooted in high expectations, positive encouragement and the creation of environments where children feel confident to take part, develop their skills and enjoy being active.
Alongside my Honours Degree in Sports Science, I am a fully qualified teacher (PGCE with QTS) and have completed a wide range of coaching qualifications over the years. In March 2026, I achieved my UEFA B Football Certificate, reflecting my ongoing commitment to professional development and best practice.
Earlier in my career, I gained valuable international experience coaching and leading sports camps in the USA, as well as coaching youth teams while playing professional football in Australia. These experiences played a formative role in shaping my coaching philosophy and reinforced the importance of sport being engaging, fun and inclusive.
Above all, I am a parent. My daughter, who is currently in Year 2, is a constant reminder of just how important it is for every child to have a positive early experience of sport and physical activity. Seeing sport through her eyes has reinforced my belief that confidence, enjoyment and a sense of belonging must come before performance. By adapting activities to suit a child’s age, ability and individual needs, we can ensure they feel happy, supported and free to be themselves – leading to greater engagement, progress and a lifelong love of being active.
I am incredibly excited to begin the Open Sports journey. Alongside my team of carefully selected coaches, I will do everything possible to ensure that every child receives a rewarding and enjoyable extra-curricular sports experience.
